Windows Server Remote Access

Instructions on the settings needed to remote into a Windows Server using a PC or a Mac and MFA.

Accessing Windows Servers remotely now requires MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication)

Prerequisites

• Must have NTNET account in good standing and MFA already setup
• Must have authorization from your supervisor or manager
• Must be in the proper Active Directory Group
• Must be connected to the Tarleton Network, either physically or through the use of VPN
• Must know the name of the server(s) the user needs access to

Windows PC

1. Open Remote Desktop Connection
2. Select the Show Options dropdown arrow
   
   


3. Select the Advanced tab and then select Settings under the Connect from anywhere section.
   
   


4. Use the following settings:
   • Select the Use these RD Gateway server settings and use MFARDGATEWAY01.tarleton.edu
   • Select the checkbox for Use my RD Gateway credentials for the remote computer
    
   Any other checkboxes should be deselected
   


5. On the General tab, type in the server hostname or IP and your applicable username and select Connect then fill in the login prompts and select OK
    
   Be sure to use your full email address - EX: user@tarleton.edu
   


6. You should then be prompted in your Microsoft Authenticator app to approve a sign-in from your username for the connection before being allowed access

Mac

Requirements:

• Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop)
  
  
   

1. Open Windows App.app
2. Credentials
   1. Click on Windows App in the menu bar and select Settings
      
      
   
   
   2. Click on Credentials and then click the plus symbol to add a new credential
      
      
   
   
   3. Username: Put in your full email address (EX: user@tarleton.edu)
   4. Password: Put in your password
   5. Give it a friendly name to be able to easily use later (EX: user)
   6. Click Add
      
      
   
   
   7. Add any more logins you may need
3. Gateway
   1. In the Windows App Settings Menu, click on Gateways on the left and click the plus symbol to add a new gateway
   2. Gateway Name: MFARDGATEWAY01.tarleton.edu
   3. Friendly Name: MFARDGATEWAY
   4. Credentials: Use PC User Account
   5. Click Add
      
      


4. Close the settings window
5. Click on the Plus sign in the upper right corner
   
   


6. Click on Add PC
   
    
   • PC Name: server hostname (EX: server01.tarleton.edu)
   • Credentials: Select the proper credentials you setup earlier
   • Friendly Name: Use a friendly name to find this server easily (EX: SERVER01)
   • Group: You can make a new group or leave it default
   • Gateway: Select MFARDGATEWAY
   • Click Add
7. Now you have a saved server in your list of PC's
8. Double click the server name
9. It will initiate a remote connection
   
   


10. It will configure the gateway using the credentials that you selected
    
    


11. You should then receive a Microsoft Authenticator prompt. Please select Approve.
12. Once approved, you're in.
