How to: Map a Departmental Share / Network or Letter Drive

How to map a departmental/network/share drive on a Windows or Mac device.

Prerequisites

  • Your Tarleton account has been granted permission to access the departmental share. You will normally receive an email stating this access has been granted.
  • Have the full path for the shared drive available, found in the email you received stating access has been granted.
    • The full path will look something like this: \\store01\userdata\Tarleton
  • You must be on a Tarleton PC or Mac connected to the university's network.

Mapping Drive to Your Tarleton Windows PC

Open a File Explorer window (where you see and navigate to files on the PC).

Click on This PC in the left sidebar.

Click on the ... menu, and then select Map Network Drive.

Select a drive letter, any letter not in use will work.

In the folder field enter the full path from your access granted email.

  • Example: \\store01\userdata\Tarleton

Make sure the Reconnect at sign-in option is enabled.

Click Finish.

The network drive should now appear in the left sidebar of any File Explorer window.

Mapping Drive to Your Tarleton Mac

Click anywhere on the desktop so Finder appears next to the Apple menu in the upper left corner.

Click on Go in the top menu bar, then select Connect to Server at the bottom.

In the top text field you'll to enter your full path, but you'll need to reformat it for macOS:

  • Original path = \\store01\userdata\Tarleton
  • Mac path = smb://store01/userdata/Tarleton

The Mac path always starts with "smb://" and then you need to change the back leaning slashes (\) into forward leaning slashes (/).

Click the + icon in the lower left corner to add the new path to the favorites list for easier access next time.

Click Connect. If prompted, enter your Tarleton username (not full email address) and password.

The drive should show up on your desktop and will be listed in the left sidebar of any Finder window.
