How to: Map a Departmental Share / Network or Letter Drive

Summary

How to map a departmental/network/share drive on a Windows or Mac device.

Body

How do I map a drive letter to a departmental share on my Tarleton Windows computer?

Prerequisites:

  • your Tarleton account has been granted permission to access the departmental share
  • you know the full path to the departmental share
  • you are on a Tarleton computer connected to the university network

In the previous example, the full path to a fictitious departmental share was determined to be \\store01\userdata\Tarleton. The following instructions will use this path and drive letter Z. When setting up your own mapped drive, you will substitute your actual departmental share path and preferred drive letter.

Windows instructions

  • Open File Explorer
  • Select Computer from the menu
  • Select Map network drive, then select Map network drive
  • Choose drive letter Z: (or your preferred drive letter) from the list of available drive letters
  • Faculty/Staff: In Folder field, type in \\store01\userdata\Tarleton (this is our example path, but you will substitute your path)
  • Check the Reconnect at sign-in if you wish to save this drive letter mapping
  • Click Finish

Mac instructions

  • Open Finder
  • Click Go from the top menu
  • Select Connect to Server
  • Type smb://store01/userdata/Tarleton in the Server Address field (this is our example path, but you will substitute your path)
  • Click the + sign if you wish to add this to your Favorite Servers list
  • Click Connect
