This guide will walk Tarleton students, faculty, and staff through connecting their Android phone to Tarleton's Wi-Fi network.
This guide is based on Samsung and Google Pixel model Android phones. Your particular flavor of Android may vary slightly, but this guide should still assist you with making the connection to Wi-Fi. Which Tarleton Wi-Fi network you use and how to connect to it will depend on that brand of Android phone you are using.
Samsung | All Other Androids
Samsung Android Phones
Use this section if you have a Samsung Android phone. You will be guided to connect to Tarleton-WiFi.
On your Android, open Settings.
Tap on Wi-Fi.
Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.
Wait a few seconds for the list of networks to load, then find and tap on Tarleton-WiFi.
Enter your Tarleton username and password.
- Students: Use your Tarleton UIN for the username.
- Faculty & Staff: Enter the first part of your Tarleton email address. For example: johntarleton@tarleton.edu would enter "johntarleton".
Set the security setting based on what is presented. This can vary, depending on your version of Android OS. Only one of these settings should be present.
- Anonymous Identity = -Leave Blank-
- CA Certificate = Don't validate / (Unspecified) / Do Not Check
- EAP Method = PEAP
- Phase 2 Authentication = None
Tap Connect when done.
When done, you'll be back in the Wi-Fi settings screen. You should see Tarleton-WiFi listed as your active network, and the Wi-Fi symbol will appear in the upper right of your phone's screen.
Other Android Phones
Use this section if you have a Motorola, Google, Xiaomi, or other brand of Android phone. You will be guided to connect to Tarleton-IoT.
If you are using a Huawei, ZTE, or Hangzhou Android phone, please note that those models are blocked from connecting the Tarleton network. You will not be able to use any Tarleton Wi-Fi option.
Find Your Wi-Fi MAC Address
The Wi-Fi MAC address is the hardware identification of your device for the Wi-Fi network. Tarleton-IoT uses your Wi-Fi MAC address to identify your phone and the password associated with it.
On your Android, open Settings.
Find and tap on System.
Go to About Phone.
Look for Wi-Fi MAC Address.
Note down the MAC address. You will need to have it when registering your Android to work with Tarleton-IoT.
Register Your Android Phone
You can do these steps with your Android phone, provided you have cellular data or other Internet access available. But you'll have an easier time doing this part with a computer.
Go to https://its-clearpass01.tarleton.edu/guest
Login with your Tarleton username and password.
Click on Create Device, in the left column.
Fill out the Register Device form:
- Device Name = Use a name you'll recognize as meaning your Android phone
- Sponsor's Email = Your Tarleton email address
- MAC Address = Your Android phone's Wi-Fi MAC address, found in the section above
Click Create Device.
The next page will provide the password associated with your Android phone for Tarleton-IoT. An email with this information will also be sent to your Tarleton account.
The password is unique to the registered device. It cannot be used for any other device. If you have additional devices you wish to connect to Tarleton-IoT, you must register each device independently and use only the password associated with the MAC address of the registered device.
Connect Your Android to Tarleton-IoT
With your Android phone registered with Tarleton-IoT, and with the password given to you during registration, you can now connect your phone to Tarleton-IoT for Wi-Fi Internet access.
On your Android, open Settings.
Tap on Wi-Fi.
Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.
Wait a few seconds for the list of networks to load, then find and tap on Tarleton-IoT.
Enter your password.
If there is a Privacy option, change it to use your device's MAC address.
Many mobile devices use randomized Wi-Fi MAC addresses in their settings to help protect your privacy. But Tarleton-IoT registration requires the same MAC address be shown each time you connect. Turning off private Wi-Fi/random MAC address functionality is required to connect to Tarleton-IoT.
Tap Connect.
When done, you'll be back in the Wi-Fi settings screen. You should see Tarleton-IoT listed as your active network, and the Wi-Fi symbol will appear in the upper right of your phone's screen.
Your Tarleton-IoT password must be changed every year. Expect to receive an email next year reminding you to update your Tarleton-IoT registration.
