Using the Classroom Instructor Cart Equipment - Guide

Instructor Cart

On the instructional cart in most of the classrooms and labs, will be the Extron MLC Audiovisual (A/V) controller. The MLC controls the projector power, room speaker volume, and which  A/V input you want to use.

Most MLC's have the following inputs and buttons, starting from the left: 

  • On- this turns on the projector
  • Off - this turns off the projector
  • PC - this is the computer in the classroom
  • Laptop - shows a laptop connected to the laptop HDMI cable in the cart
  • Doc Cam - also known as the visualizer, acts like an overhead projector and displays what is shown on the base
  • Mute - this button mutes the video in the room
  • Volume knob - this controls the room audio volume on the selected input

Please turn off the projector when you are done with your class.

Every instructional cart will have a projector. This will be mounted either in the ceiling or above the Smart Board.

Doc Cam or Visualizer

A Doc Cam or Visualizer is a modern overhead projector. Doc Cams are designed to project images of documents and objects when combined with the room projector. Most Doc Cams will power on automatically when you raise the arm, but you can also power them on manually with the power button located on the top of the Doc Cam head.

Zoom Wheel and Control Panel

The zoom wheel controls the camera zoom to change size of pick-up area. To zoom in on a document or object, use the zoom wheel located on the doc cam head to zoom in and out. 

The control panel has several options, starting at the top and working clock-wise: 

  • Freeze - Freezes the current image. The LED beside the key indicates the state.
  • Auto Focus (AF) - Switches the auto focus on and off. The LED beside the key indicates the state. Press and hold for two seconds activates the manual focus mode, use the navigation keys up/down to
  • focus near/far
  • Source - Toggles between Visualizer image, external input and USB storage device
  • Preset - For storing the preset, press the PRESET key for more than 2 seconds. This button is unused.

If you are experiencing issues with your image focusing, press and hold the AF button for two seconds to activate manual mode. Press the AF button once more to enable auto focus.

Smart Podium

The Smart Podium is a touchscreen monitor that connects with the SMART Ink and Notebook software. This device allows users to write on the screen as if it were a whiteboard, similar to Smart Boards.

The Smart Podium pen and control buttons are on the right side of the podium. You can change the ink color by pressing the button that corresponds with the color of the ink you would like to write with.

On the newer models, the Smart Podiums power button is located on the upper left-back of the podium. It is on when the LED is blue. All other Smart Podiums power is located in the lower left of the podium, and when powered on the LED is green.

Some classrooms have a Smart Board. This type of board is like a digital whiteboard, and functions similarly to the Smart Podium allowing users to write on the board with the specialized pens located in the tray. Please do not use regluar dry-erase board markers on these boards, it will ruin the board.

Web Conferencing - Zoom

The web conference enabled room equipment is located in a lockbox on the instructor cart. Most rooms on campus are web conferencing ready.

Equipment for web conferencing: 

  • Lockbox
  • PTZ Camera and remote
  • Microphone bodypack or ceiling mic (ball or bar)

The web conference enabled room equipment is located in a lockbox on the instructor cart. The combination to the lockbox is the room number. The lockbox will have a lapel microphone and remote for the PTZ camera.

Please be sure to turn the lapel microphone off when you are done using it.

The PTZ web camera is located on a wall facing the instructor cart.

The PTZ camera is controlled by the remote control located in the lockbox on the instructor cart. The PTZ camera remote has the function to move the camera as well as zoom in and out.
