Add an Individual to a Canvas Community

Tags Canvas

Communities are a type of Canvas course that is outside of courses for credit.  When a community is created, an individual becomes the owner of that community and is responsible for managing the enrollments within.  Unlike courses for credit, the Canvas community allows for the addition and removal of students as well as other roles.  Anyone with the teacher role can add and remove members of a community and can take on the responsibilities of the owner.

For more details on adding people to a Canvas course, follow the link below to Instructure’s official guide.  Note that the documentation provided in the official Canvas documentation is general, and some options may not be available at Tarleton.
How do I add users to a course?

To add an individual to a Canvas Community

  1. While in the community, select the People link on the left menu.

  1. From the People page, select the +People button

  1. In the People pop-out window, choose how to add people under Add user(s) by – by marking the Login ID radial button, then enter the part of the email address before the at (@) symbol.
Example of a Login ID:  jtarleton@tarleton.edu would be jtarleton.
Multiple people can be added at a time by separating them with commas or entering them one per line.

  1. Select the role the new member will have.  By default, it is set to student.  Select Next.
For more details about adding people to a course in Canvas, please refer to the official Instructure documentation at the top of this section.

  1. Verify that the correct individuals have been entered to be added and select Add Users

  1. Once a user is added, they will receive an invitation to join the community as an announcement in Canvas and via email.  While the invitation is outstanding, a pending tag will be added next to the name on the people list.  Once the invitation is accepted, the tag will be removed.
